A sharp decline of coconut production in Tanzania in a recently years is due to aging of coconut palm tree, general change of weather and climatic condition that perpetuate environmental degradation, lack of conducive policy and legal administrative framework condition are among of factors which constrain a growth of the sector. While on the other hand a drastic increases of demand of coconut has completely failed to meet its corresponding supply that posed important question about potential for scale up initiative. Investment Ltd expansion plans and so does the coconut smallholder farmers in Mafia Island to address issue of poverty eradication, Income Generating Activity (IGA), unemployment, revenue? The company have conceived the project idea intervention for scale up in order to address these fundamental challenges both in a short and long run in a sustainable manner at the same time touches on side of supply and demand side as well.
Apparently, Tanzania is a tenth largest producer of coconut globally and leading producer in the African continent with estimated production capacity of 530,000 tons per year. Most of coconut producing areas are found along Eastern/Coastal part of the country i.e. Unguja, Pemba and Mafia Island. It is estimated that there is total of 2.6 million coconut palm tree, With tree growing on some area which covers 240,000 acres while ¼ of all palm trees are found in Island of Zanzibar and Mafia. The 95% of the crop is produced by about 300,000 coconut smallholder farmers the rest is produced by medium and large scale commercial growers.
